Time for Renewal

Where are you today in terms of what you want to be?

When is the right time to do get to work on that?

Who you want to interact with and how?

What work do you want to do to leverage your full potential?

My coaching clients are typically working on topics of communication, leadership and career progression. Solutions include making themselves visible, connecting with seniors, showing executive-like behavior, building a network and doing that with the commitment to show progression in their careers.

I was taking them through the process and all of the sudden we were paralyzed.   Our lives stopped. We focused on health, family and changed in how we work and expected deliverables. I changed the way I operated and prepared my coaching sessions hopeful to create an intimate space through a screen…and then I was surprised with where my clients wanted to focus their attention.

This pandemic had thrown us into reflection. I had to quickly reshape and have found there are three large areas where people are focusing:

  • The way they see themselves
  • The way they see their relationships
  • The way they see their work

My clients wanted to use the time to focus on what is important in their lives, planning their career future in totally unexpected ways and refocusing on what their contributions would be. This redefining of who they are and who they want to be became more relevant than anything else. Our conversations turned more philosophical, aspirational and even “spiritual”.

It implied asking thought provoking questions for which most had no answer, as if they had never given thought to these issues.  As existential as they were, the way we thought of these topics in the past mean nothing today. Of course, we all continue to want to make contributions and be recognized for our work, but how we do that changed.  Those that were expatriates wanted to plan their trip back home to be close to family; fast trackers were now redefining what success meant to them and if they even wanted it; and others were “done” and looking to start their own company or move into more meaningful activities.

Everyone is now aware of home dynamic that they had not evidenced before. They take meetings with kids coming to hug them in the middle of the session or cats and dogs jumping in front of the computer screen.  They shut down their videos to serve breakfast and make themselves vulnerable by opening up their homes to strangers through video call.

I wondered why the dynamism of the way we lived our lives before had created so much noise that it prevented us from focusing on what really counts.  Perhaps we are finally exactly where we need to be. So, take advantage of this situation and quiet down so you can take yourself through the questions that matter:

  • Who do you really want to be?
  • How far are you from that and what do you need to do to get there?
  • How do you want to be remembered and recognized for?
  • What are your values?
  • What will make you truly happy?

The world IS NOT GOING BACK TO WHERE WE WERE BEFORE.  This is a NEW NORMAL so move there.
